For elopements with just the couple, a first look is not much different than a traditional ceremony. For weddings with even a handful of guests, considering a first look is a great idea for a few reasons!
The main reason we love first looks is because it provides you a private environment where you can be real with each other without any external pressures. This day is one you’ve been planning for months, if not years, and the anticipation can be a major stressor you could easily avoid with a first look. If the thought of having a private first look where you can see your partner before you walk down the aisle floods your imagination with comfort and bliss, then you should definitely do a first look before your ceremony. If you’re on the fence, maybe plan one to be on the safe side. If people are insisting you do one but you don’t feel it’s for you? Talk to your partner & make the decision that feels best for the two of you. If first looks aren’t your thing, traditional ceremonies offer some of the most timeless, beautiful moments as well (see featured image for a personal favorite).
First looks don’t have to be reserved for just the bride and groom, either! Daddy-Daughter first looks get me every. single. time.
Some technicalities to consider if you decide to have a first look:
– Travel from your getting ready location and his (especially if you are getting ready at the same location, ensuring you don’t see each other when traveling to the first look spot!). You’d be surprised how many couples don’t consider this bit of travel. Have two cars ready – bridesmaids, parents, even your photographers can assist. Just make sure it’s identified beforehand!
– Communication! It’s a great idea to have a bridesmaid and groomsman connected via text (even using the bride and grooms phones if they aren’t) to allow for timeline check ins and coordination beforehand. Austin and I regularly serve as a great point of communication between each half of the bridal party and are happy to do so, as well.
